Spotlight on Hvar as an incentive travel destination (Croatia #1)

15th September 2015

Quickly getting a reputation as the St. Tropez of Croatia, the beautiful little island of Hvar makes a great incentive travel destination. A short speedboat ride from Split takes you straight to the heart of Hvar, where suddenly time stops as you immerse yourself in island life. From pretty streets with bustling cafés, restaurants and bars, to island hopping on speedboats to discover remote coves and trendy beach bars, Hvar has plenty to offer.

I've recently returned from a research trip to Croatia, visiting both Hvar and Dubrovnik. In this first of two articles, discover what makes this small piece of paradise called Hvar one of the top five Lonely Planet destinations in the world.

What to do

There's a great range of activities and experiences on the island, from exploring in 4x4 Jeeps and visiting a deserted village, to a hip island tour in customised VW Beetles where you can visit olive farms, vineyards, stop for a cookery lesson or include a fun challenge or treasure hunt.

As you might expect on a Mediterranean island there's even more to do out on the water, where you can take RIBs, speedboats, pirate ships or super yachts to visit remote coves, glorious beaches and trendy beach bars and restaurants.

Dining out

Whether you are looking for a relaxed night out in a traditional restaurant, an elegant meal to impress set against a backdrop of luxury yachts, or to take boats out to a private island for a dinner under the stars - the options are endless, the food delightful and the service exemplary.

The nightlife in Hvar is stylish but relaxed. The streets around the main square offer a rich mix of bars where you can simply chill-out over a drink. For those looking for a bit more action the music bars along the waterfront have a party vibe, and for the real party animals you can take a boat at midnight to the Carpe Diem club which is pure Ibiza style clubbing.

There's a limited selection of hotels suitable for incentive groups in Hvar so it's generally not a "last minute" destination option. Our two favourites are a small designer boutique hotel with rooftop pool close to the heart of town or, for larger groups, a chic resort hotel just along the coast.

Key facts

Croatia is two hours ahead of GMT, and from the UK to Split is a flight time of 2 hours 25 mins, making it suitable for a weekend trip of two to four nights. Our standard itinerary is two nights. For incentive groups we would recommend travelling from May to June or September to October when the weather is good, but you avoid the high season crowds.
