Spotlight on Dubrovnik as an incentive travel destination (Croatia #2)

29th September 2015

Dubrovnik is one of the world's finest and oldest walled cities. Set in crystal clear seas on a beautiful coastline it's a simply stunning historical city. Much of the Old Town is classed as a UNESCO world heritage site, but Dubrovnik is not just a place of history - it's a vibrant city with a rich mix of stylish restaurants and café bars. Add a range of golden sandy beaches, shingle bays and beautiful islands to be explored, and we think it makes a perfect incentive travel destination.

This is the second of two articles about Croatia, which I've recently visited on a research trip. Following on from the picturesque island of Hvar, here's an insight into what Dubrovnik has to offer.

What to do

The city tour is a must, but best done at the start or end of the day to avoid the crowds. End the tour with lunch in one of the quieter squares or possibly dinner as the sun sets.

There are lots of other activities and excursions in and around Dubrovnik to fit in. One of our favourites is a treasure hunt in VW Beetles out along the coast where, amongst other stops, you visit an oyster farm and eat oysters fresh from the sea. Or you can take powerboats out to the islands to explore hidden bays and have lunch overlooking the beach.

An alternative approach is to take traditional boats over to a local island to relax on the beach and have a leisurely lunch, or try a 4x4 rally into the hills to an organic farm for olive oil tasting, wine tasting and food to die for. Finally, you should also take the cable car to the top of Mount Srđ for a cocktail as you watch the sunset over Dubrovnik, where for the more adventurous you can also do a buggy safari.

Dining out

There's a fantastic selection of dining options right on your doorstep, from 5* restaurants with terraces overlooking the Old Town at night, to trendy beach-side bars that turn into clubs as the sun goes down. However if you want to step out a bit, take a boat to an exceptional fish restaurant that has its own private beach where you can party till the sun comes up. Or maybe immerse yourself in something a little more traditional at a local farm offering Dalmatian fare and entertainment.

Nightlife

The nightlife in Dubrovnik is relaxed, with bars and cafés spread throughout the Old Town. For those looking for a bit more action there are a number of music bars in the Old Town, some lively beach bars and a couple of clubs for those who don't want to go home too early!

Hotels

Without doubt the best place to stay is in one of the hotels along the coast just outside the Old Town, most of which have pools, private beaches and incredible views. They are only 15 minutes' walk from the Old Town. However, if budgets are tight there are a number of coastal properties on the other side of town that offer some great alternatives - you just need to make sure you are not too far out.

Key facts

Croatia is two hours ahead of GMT, and from the UK to Dubrovnik is a flight time of 2 hours 25 mins, making it suitable for a weekend trip of two to four nights. Our standard itinerary is two nights. For incentive groups we would recommend travelling from May to June or September to October when the weather is good, but you avoid the high season crowds.
