With the winter sports season in the Northern Hemisphere well underway, it's time to dust off your skis and salopettes ready for some action on the slopes. Here are some of the best resorts and lodges from around the globe, which offer both great skiing and top-class accommodation. While you're there, don't just limit yourself to the ski slopes - most of these resorts have a fantastic range of winter activities, from sledging and skating to snowmobiling and ice canyoning, making them ideal for a travel incentive or prize promotion.

For stunning views, you can't beat the Riffelalp Resort in gorgeous Zermatt. Opening your curtains to the imposing sight of the Matterhorn will have you itching to get out on the slopes as soon as possible. Situated at 2,222m this is the highest of the Alpine resorts and most of the rooms have balconies giving you that spectacular view. Although Zermatt is a remarkably peaceful, carefree getaway it has no shortage of thrills; the resort holds the world's second-biggest, lift-served vertical descent and enjoys huge snowfalls thanks to its altitude.

Park City's reputation for great skiing helped make the area a host venue for the 2002 Winter Olympics. The resort, which boasts 19 ski lifts, also limits lift-ticket sales in order to avoid long waits in line between descents. At the foot of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps, its renowned for having one of the world's longest ski runs - the 20km Vallée Blanche with a vertical descent of 2,700m. Give it a try if you're brave enough. Located within a few minutes of the centre of town, the elegant Hameau Albert 1er hotel is the perfect place to retire after working up an appetite on the slopes; the food is incredible. After dinner, choose to unwind by the in-room wood-burning fires or take an evening dip in the indoor-outdoor pool which looks out onto Mont Blanc.

Quebec's Tremblant is one of the better-known resorts in eastern Canada. Open since 1939, the mountain has four distinct slopes laced with 94 runs.
