Promotion & incentive ideas - Top 10 things to do in October

3rd October 2016

We're approaching the time of year when it seems like it's suddenly time to dig out our cosy jumpers and settle in for the colder months. However, if you'd rather avoid the chill a little longer then we have some exciting events from across the globe - ideal for a promotion or incentive - which offer the perfect excuse for an escape in October.

Promotion & incentive ideas for October

Promotion & incentive ideas - Voodoo Experience

Voodoo Experience, Louisiana, USA

New Orleans has been called America's most haunted city, making it the perfect location for this spooky festival set over Halloween weekend. Dressing up is a must at Voodoo Experience; flamboyant and frightening costumes fill the festival and add to the mysterious mood. In terms of the music, the three stages - Le Carnival, Le Flambeau and Le Ritual - feature the sounds of underground New Orleans, newcomers from the local music scene and mainstream headliners respectively. Headline acts this year include Arcade Fire and The Weeknd.

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, New Mexico, USA

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta has grown in size, from its humble beginnings with a mere 13 balloons in 1972, to the sizeable event it is today. For nine days in October the skies above the Rio Grande Valley are transformed into a colourful masterpiece as 750 gas-filled giants rise as one into the early morning sky.

CRSSD Festival, California, USA

Hitting San Diego for the first time in 2015, CRSSD has already established a reputation for being a festival to watch in coming years. In comparison to some of its American counterparts, CRSSD has a more intimate, grown-up feel, with a 21+ age limit meaning it attracts ravers of a slightly older demographic. The 2016 line-up includes Miike Snow, Zhu, Cashmere Cat and Lido.

La Calaca, Mexico

A relative newcomer to Mexico's calendar, La Calaca is a participatory arts festival inspired by the country's Day of the Dead celebrations. Tied in with Mexico's belief that death is just a natural part of life and that family members should be remembered and celebrated, the festival centres around a series of interactive art installations, musical performances and creative workshops which celebrate those who have passed.

Joshua Tree Music Festival, California, USA

Set in beautiful Joshua Tree National Park, Joshua Tree Music Festival is an intimate affair drawing around 4,000 attendees each year. Unlike other festivals, Joshua Tree isn't about the big name acts. The festival plays host to performers that many music fans won't have heard of - priding itself on the fact that festival-goers leave having discovered a new favourite artist. As well as music, there's also a world market featuring organic foods and locally made crafts; a programme of yoga to help you relax and unwind; and, of course, the otherworldly landscape of Joshua Tree National Park to explore.

Concurs de Castells, Spain

Translated to the human tower competition, Concurs de Castells is held every two years in Tarragona, close to Barcelona. Human towers are created, rising up to nine stories high and usually topped by a very brave child. 32 teams participate in the competition, being judged on several categories including difficulty and height of tower. As well as the tower building, events take place throughout the city including parades, concerts and firework displays.

As well as great music, the festival is all about fun - highlights include a silent disco with world class DJs, sunset Ferris wheel rides and life-size games of Jenga.

Diwali, India

Starting at the end of October and extending into November, Diwali - or the Festival of Lights - is a Hindu celebration commemorating Rama's return home after exile. To mark this occasion India is adorned in light, with thousands of lights, lamps and candles to guide Rama's path. This is a fascinating time of year to visit India, and an opportunity to see it at its most colourful, when bright saris are worn, lotus flowers mark the doorways and fireworks brighten the night sky.

New York City Wine and Food Festival, New York, USA

The New York City Wine and Food Festival is a food festival with a difference. Rather than being all about gluttony and indulgence, this is a charity event whose proceeds go towards ending world hunger. Culinary giants descend on New York for the festival where a typical few days could see you attending an ice cream making class, enjoying a dinner created by a top US chef and dancing until the early hours at a 'Rock and Roll Sushi' party.
